And I have a to-do list a mile long. Which I need to complete on about 5 hours’ sleep. It’s the most bizarre thing, being alone in the house. That has happened exactly three times in the last 8 weeks. The temptation to just go back to bed is very, very strong, but I really need to be miserably exhausted all day so I sleep tonight and get into a working sleep/wake rhythm.

The Last Day of Summer!
We’ve been setting the alarm clocks earlier and earlier each day, which has made this weekend far less of a last hurrah than something we’re all dragging through like zombies. This morning, though, we took advantage of being up early anyway and drove out to Ortley Beach. We parked the car and watched the sun rise over the ocean. The kids had never seen a sunrise, and they thought it was really cool.
Afterwards, we stopped at Ob-co’s for doughnuts. Hubby got a blueberry muffin, I got a cinnamon croissant doughnut. Carolyn wanted nothing to do with doughnuts, Audrey got an apple fritter, but decided she didn’t like it.
Even though I’m sleeping better, finally, I didn’t sleep well at all last night, so I took a nap after lunch, then finished reading jPod by Douglas Coupland. What a strange, strange book. After dinner, Audrey and I took a nice walk, and now I think we’re only an hour away from bedtime. First day of school tomorrow for the girls, first day of Middle School for Carolyn.
So Glad the Trees are Gone!
The dead and diseased ones, that is. The healthy ones we left up seem to be handling things pretty well. The wind was wicked all day yesterday, and it doesn’t seem to have let up today. The screenhouse around the hot tub, despite its weight and the additional weight holding down the corners, has been blown a good two feet over – we’ll have to move it back so the corner of the hot tub doesn’t tear the fabric. The patio chairs fell over early on. If we hadn’t had the dead branches removed and the trees infested with wood-boring insects taken down, I have a feeling we might be sleeping in a hotel right now, wondering how much water damage the house would sustain from the holes where the trees fell. The wind is coming in and rattling the blower for the furnace/air conditioning. All night the noise of acorns dropping onto the roof kept me awake. My sinuses are killing me, my headache is not so awful as yesterday but still a PITA, back hurts from tossing and turning in bed, but at least we don’t have trees through the roof.
